Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, Partner
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB.
I’ve worked at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP for 19 years. My day revolves around partnering with long-term clients to develop, protect, litigate, and license intellectual property business assets. These can range from patents, to trademarks, to copyrights, and even trade secrets. I’m also the Intellectual Property Practice Group Leader for the Phoenix office.
Recently, I’ve represented international electronics companies and manufacturers in lawsuits involving patent and trade dress infringement. I’ve also represented a real estate developer, healthcare company, and an Internet search company in lawsuits involving trademark infringement and cybersquatting.
Software companies I represented involved copyright infringement and contract breaches. In addition, I’ve also helped prepare and prosecute patent, trademark, and copyright applications for organizations such as universities, global computer chip companies, and consumer electronics companies.
Sidenote: Although I’m currently a lawyer, I actually started as an engineer at Motorola. I decided to switch careers by going to law school.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORKING?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and three children (ages 9, 7, and 5). I enjoy hiking, camping, and traveling overseas off the beaten path. I also serve as a worship leader at my church. I’m a fan of college and professional football, and lately I’ve been attempting to exercise.
WHY ARE YOU SERVING AS A FINAL ROUND JUDGE?
I want to give back to the science and engineering community, because it’s where I started my career. I possess a unique combination of technical, business, and legal skills that I believe can help others succeed.
WHY SHOULD STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS ATTEND THE FINAL ROUND AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE?
SASEtank will actively teach the audience about entrepreneurship and how to conduct a persuasive presentation. All of this will be in an engaging and dynamic environment!
