Shekhar and Anu Mitra Family
Shekhar Mitra, Ph.D., currently Partner at Your Encore Consulting, retired as Senior VP, Global R&D and Innovation, at Procter and Gamble Co., after a career that spanned 29 years. He is associated with well-known health, wellness, oral care and beauty brand in-market innovations (such as Prilosec, Aleve, Crest Whitestrips, ProHealth, SK-II, Olay, and Gucci products). He has over 50 patents to his name. Shekhar received his undergraduate degree in Biophysical Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology; his MS and Ph.D. degrees in Life Sciences from Columbia University in 1981; and was a Jane Coffin Medical Research Fellow at Yale University from 1981-84. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor and is listed in the U.S. Congressional Record for his contributions to touching and improving lives through his impact on consumer innovations and community service. He is the Co-Founder and President of the first North American Society for Asian Scientists & Engineers. Along with his wife, he is active in the community in supporting arts and cultural organizations, education, and the homeless population.
Anu M. Mitra received her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester and has worked since 1988 as a faculty at the Union Institute & University, a nontraditional university for working adults. Her areas of scholarly research are design thinking; visual culture and leadership development; and arts-based practices in organizational settings. Her research and workshops linking art, social justice and leadership development have been offered at many forums, including the Academy of Management conference; the Lowe Museum of Art at the University of Miami; the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles; the University of Cincinnati Medical School; and others. Her research on visual strategy and its relationship to leadership practices has been published in many forums. In 2011, she was designated the Teacher of the Year by the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges. She was a member of Leadership Cincinnati, Class XXI, a year-long leadership study forum organized by the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. She serves on the Board of Trustees at the Cincinnati Ballet, where she heads the Diversity Advisory. Additionally, she serves as a docent in the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum, and the 21 C Museum Hotel.
Along with her husband, Shekhar, they are the longest standing volunteers at the Barron Shelter for Homeless Men--since 1991, they have cooked for the Shelter on the second Saturday of every month. They are the parents of three adult children—Priyanka, Arnav, and Shaheel-- and a beloved Siberian Husky.
