SASE and Allies Respond to Recent Atlanta Shootings
March 19, 2021
We join the nation in mourning this week's shootings in Atlanta. As an organization that promotes and celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) visibility, it is difficult not to take this loss of life personally. It is especially heartbreaking because this is not an isolated occurrence, but rather the largest single incident in the unprecedented wave of targeted anti-Asian violence that has swept the globe during the past year.
In light of these ongoing events, we are compelled to reiterate our previous statement: we unequivocally denounce all verbal or physical attacks against members of the AAPI community or any other community based on their identity or heritage.
These victims are innocent, vibrant people whose stories deserve to be told. We call on law enforcement as well as media outlets to be more sensitive and mindful about how they portray violent crimes. Attempting to explain or justify a suspect's behavior diminishes the value of these victims as human beings, and it amplifies the already devastating emotional toll on the victims' families, friends and communities.
As tragic as each of these incidents has been, we hope that the widespread attention from this latest act of violence will serve as a watershed moment in our efforts to advance the perception and inclusion of the AAPI community on the national and global stage. Several allied organizations have aligned with our statement in solidarity with this vital cause. We are advocating for change at a systemic level to elevate the perspectives of all populations who have been underserved and underrepresented in our collective society.
By encouraging equality and allyship, we can more effectively dismantle the attitudes and behaviors that contribute to racially motivated violence. This goal is achievable with support and participation from people of all backgrounds and experiences. Please take a moment to check on your AAPI friends and colleagues, and listen to and learn from their perspectives. We look forward to the example that our actions now will set for the professional leaders that we are preparing for the future -- a safe, equitable future based on respect for all cultures.

Respectfully signed,

SASE Denounces Violence Against AAPI Community
March 10, 2021
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and frequent national headlines about violence and hate crimes against Asian heritage individuals, the Society of Asian Scientists & Engineers (SASE) unequivocally denounces any verbal or physical attacks against members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, particularly our most vulnerable: the elderly.
In 2020 alone, it was reported that one in four young Asian Americans experienced some form of racism, much of it stemming from false, blameful rhetoric regarding the cause of this pandemic. Simply put, this type of blatant discrimination against one's identity and heritage -- for any reason, at any time, with or without a pandemic -- is unacceptable.
We stand in solidarity with the victims of these attacks and their families by asking for peace and healing among all people during this time of global crisis. We also call on our friends, colleagues, and allied organizations around the world to do their part in identifying and eliminating the negative, systemic behaviors that have resulted in this unprecedented level of violence against the AAPI community.
As an organization, SASE prepares AAPI students and professionals to become leaders in their fields while celebrating diversity in all settings, from campuses to offices and everywhere in between. On behalf of our Board, our staff, and our entire membership, our most sincere hope is for the AAPI community to enter a respectful, welcoming future -- one where fundamental human rights are given the utmost priority.
How Can You Help?
- Educate yourself through advocacy organizations like Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAAJ).
- Participate in bystander intervention training to learn how to respond to racist harassment.
- Report hate crimes using this incident reporting tool to help develop better anti-violence policies.
- Donate directly to victims who have experienced anti-Asian attacks.
- Attend our virtual Spark the Future competition on April 30, which asks teams to develop creative, engaging solutions to social justice challenges. Like all SASE programs, the purpose is to elevate AAPI voices and promote allyship among the global community.

Professional Track for Growing Leaders
SASE to partner with Elevate to give rise to Asian American leaders
Northwest Chicago, Illinois (Oct. 12-14, 2017) - On Thursday, October 12, SASE is collaborating with Elevate-a partnership between California State University - Fullerton, University of California - Riverside and San Diego, and Spectrum Knowledge-to arrange an Employee Resource Group (ERG) Leadership Development session. Presented by Vu H. Pham, Ph.D., this half-day development session will provide leading-edge, innovative, and practical insights on ERGs and will help to identify how any one individual can have a bigger role in the growth and achievements of their organizations.
On Friday, UnlimitU, another leadership program designed towards Asian professionals, will “focus on agile learning and rapid iteration shifts rather than introducing complex, copious concepts.” Asian professionals and leaders too often over-study and over-prepare-all while underestimating and undervaluing their leadership potential. SASE, empowered by Elevate, aims to change that.
